The Programmatic Glossary
A practical glossary designed to help marketers, advertisers and ad-tech professionals understand the terminology that powers programmatic advertising
Ad Formats
Outstream Video
Video ads that play outside of video content: in a text article, within a social feed or in a banner slot. Unlike in-stream video, outstream does not require the publisher to have their own video content. The ad creates its own video player.
HOW IT WORKS
An outstream unit appears in a designated slot on the page, often between paragraphs of text. As the user scrolls to it, the video begins playing, usually auto-play and muted. When the user scrolls past, it stops. This format expands video advertising to publishers who primarily produce text or images.
EXAMPLE
A financial news website writes articles rather than producing video. By implementing outstream video units between article paragraphs, they can sell premium video advertising inventory at video CPMs (Cost Per Mille) of $8 to $20, rather than display CPMs of $1 to $3, without investing in video content production.
