Margin Management

The process of controlling the difference between what advertisers pay (the buy-side price) and what publishers receive (the sell-side price) within a programmatic ad stack. Effective margin management balances commercial sustainability with remaining competitive for both buyers and publishers.

HOW IT WORKS

In a programmatic supply chain, multiple parties take a cut — SSPs, exchanges, ad networks and technology vendors all charge fees or retain a margin. Managing these margins means understanding where value leaks, negotiating tech fees, and optimising the net revenue that flows to publishers versus what buyers pay.

EXAMPLE

An ad network buys inventory at a $1.50 CPM from publishers and resells it to advertisers at a $2.50 CPM (Cost per Mille). The $1.00 difference covers their technology costs, operations and profit margin. If their costs rise or they want to attract higher-quality publishers, they need to either compress margin or increase sell-side prices.
